What´s new in CDendro & CooRecorder version 7.4?
News as of March 1 2011

Open and Save operations

Open and save operations have been collected into one open and one save menu command, but also into submenu commands for easy access to your data.

Binding an unknown file name extension to a certain type of file

When you try to open a collection file with an extension unknown to CDendro like e.g. ".tuc", you will be asked by CDendro to specify what type of data it is - in this case probably a Tucson decadal .rwl-type file though named e.g. "SouthE.tuc" and not "SouthE.rwl"

This way you do not have to rename old files from elsewhere which you try to read into CDendro.

CDendro also gives you an option to remember your selection, so the next time you open that type of file, there will be no more questions.

The same mechanism holds for "single sample files". When CDendro finds the file name extension ambigous, it will ask you for a clarification. This way you can open Belfast Apple files, though they are named like Q1234.txt

BULK addition

BULK addition There is now a command to import all single sample files of a certain type from a directory. We have used that to import all the 9000 separately downloaded Belfast files into one collection. This command was needed because Windows has a limitation meaning that you can only select a maximum of some 250 files in the Open Files dialogue box.

Delete selected members

The "Delete member" button of a collection has been changed to a "Delete selected members" button:
  • It operates on all selected members of a collection. (i.e. click one member, then hold down the shift key and click another member to select also all members in between. Then click "Delete selected members" to delete (remove) them all from the collection.)
  • This command will now also retain your current member focus, i.e. the "member-lines" to delete are just removed from the screen - all other members keep their relative positions on the screen, i.e. even the current sorting order!

The cross correlation matrix as a chocolate graphic

The collection buttons "Find best cc" and "Find current cc" have been replaced by a "Show Cross correlations" button with a dialogue where you can specify what you want to see in your cross correlation matrix.

As before you can have the matrix display either the matching quality of the current offsets or the quality of the best matchings. You can also sort the matrix rows and columns by a mean of best or current offset correlation values towards other members.

This is an excellent method to find a suitable member to start with when you want to synchronize an unsynchronized collection.

By having the matrix cells colored (chocolate graphics) according to the matching quality, you can easily find the best - and the worst - matching cases.

Test towards reference

The "Test towards reference" button of a collection has been split into two buttons: Test towards reference and Test towards undated reference.

Test towards undated reference: (Right-click for limited search) This command will see that the reference is handled as undated during the operation, i.e. the condensed report (if checked) will then contain a list of best matches instead of correlation values for current dating.

Intended to be used when the collection contains chronologies from various regions and each chronology should be matched towards a to-be-dated sample. That sample is then first selected as "the reference". This is a useful tool when the origin of the sample is unknown, like for ships timber.

Add best members to target collection

Add best members to target collection has been enhanced to better find a best member.
There is now an extra button when adding to "add, close and then show the next candidate for addition" in one single operation.

See also subsection "Synchronizing a collection" in the section on "Using CDendro".

Enhanced Windows List

The Windows List (a menu command) is especially useful when you work with your samples and collections in a "Maximized" windows mode, i.e. when you do not see the samples and collections stacked on each other. Then the Windows List gives you a quick way to turn over to another sample or collection.

You can now right click on members of the Windows List to get various commands directly available without first turning over to some sample or collection window, do a command and then turn back to the previous window.

Collection Comment handling

Comment handling has been enhanced so that you can (for checked members) copy e.g. file prenames to the comment field.

This is useful when you add several collections into one big collection but want to retain information of the origin of each member.

Sheffield D-format files

CDendro can now read Ian Tyers' D-Format files. (For a description see Cybis dendro wiki on D-format

CooRecorder Display settings

With the new "color circle" the selection of a suitable color is now very easy to do.

If the background is yellowish, then select a complementary color on the opposite side of the circle, e.g. blueish as in this example.

The measurment screen is updated all the time while you change the color!

Do not forget to set the Brightness (3) to the top of the vertical bar, otherwise most colors will be very dark!
And do not forget to save your settings if you want to use these settings the next time you start CooRecorder!
